Jaw clenching · Newport News
Jaw clenching, grinding, and the masseter.
The masseter is the muscle you can feel bulge at the angle of your jaw when you bite down. It is one of the strongest muscles in the body relative to its size, and in people who clench or grind it gets bigger the way any worked muscle does.
That produces two complaints that are really the same problem: a jaw that aches, and a lower face that has gradually squared off.
What treatment does
Neuromodulator into the masseter reduces the force it can generate. Less force means less clenching, and over successive treatments a muscle that is used less loses bulk — which narrows the lower face.
Two different timelines, worth separating because they are often conflated:
Symptom relief — less aching, less morning tightness — tends to arrive within two to four weeks.
Visible narrowing — that is muscle atrophy, and it takes months and repeated treatment. It is not a first-session result and anyone promising one is overselling.
Doses here are substantially larger than facial expression areas, because the muscle is much larger. Duration often runs longer too — frequently four to six months.
When you need a dentist, not us
This is the part that decides whether you should book.
If you have worn, chipped, or fractured teeth, a treatment plan that stops at the muscle is incomplete. You likely need a night guard to protect the tooth surfaces, and neuromodulator does not replace one.
If you have jaw joint clicking, locking, or pain on opening, that points at the temporomandibular joint itself, not just the muscle. TMD is a broader diagnosis than an overworked masseter, and it deserves an evaluation — often dental or oral and maxillofacial — before anyone injects anything.
If you have facial pain of unclear cause, that needs a diagnosis first.
Masseter treatment addresses muscular clenching and muscular bulk. It is a good answer to that specific problem and a poor substitute for a workup you actually need. We will tell you which situation you are in.
Who plans and injects this
Planned and injected by Adam Medlin, FNP-BC, an autonomous nurse practitioner licensed in Virginia. Botox is $14 per unit and Letybo is $11 per unit — both published, because you should know the number before you book.
Frequently asked
Will this stop my grinding at night?
It reduces the force you can generate, which reduces symptoms and protects teeth somewhat. It does not stop the behaviour, and it is not a replacement for a night guard if your dentist has recommended one.
Will my face look different?
Over time and repeated treatment, usually yes — narrower at the jaw angle. Some people want that and some don't. Say which you are, because it changes the dose.
Can it affect my chewing?
At appropriate doses, no meaningful change in normal eating. Too much can cause fatigue with chewing tough food. It is dose-dependent and temporary.
Is this covered by insurance?
We do not bill insurance for it. This is a cash-pay cosmetic and functional treatment.
Is it off-label?
Yes. Masseter treatment for clenching and jaw contour is an established off-label use, widely practiced and well described. We say so rather than letting you assume otherwise.
