Before and after photographs — and whose they are.
IPL photofacial
IPL is filtered light rather than a laser — a broad band of wavelengths absorbed both by brown pigment and by the haemoglobin in small surface vessels, which is why one session can address sun spots and redness together. We use it for the IPL photofacial, and it is one of the tools we consider for rosacea and for hyperpigmentation.

Er:YAG resurfacing
Er:YAG at 2940 nm is an ablative resurfacing laser: it removes a controlled depth of the skin surface, along with the pigment sitting in it, and the new surface heals over the following days. Ours is a full-field handpiece: it treats the whole surface of the area worked on, rather than a pattern of separate columns with untreated skin between them. It sits under laser and light, and is one of several routes we weigh for hyperpigmentation.

Long-pulsed Nd:YAG
The long-pulsed Nd:YAG at 1064 nm reaches deeper than IPL and is absorbed strongly by haemoglobin, which makes it the tool for a vessel you can point at: a thread vein on the nose, a venous lake on the nostril rim, or spider veins on the leg. It also carries part of the vascular work in rosacea.

RF microneedling — PiXel8
PiXel8-RF is radiofrequency microneedling: needle arrays place radiofrequency energy in the dermis at a depth set zone by zone, to prompt collagen remodelling over the months following a series. It is the slowest-acting device on this page, and the one where the honest unit of measurement is months rather than a single visit.

Dermapen 4 microneedling
The Dermapen 4 is a mechanical microneedling device: a motorised array of very fine needles making thousands of controlled micro-channels, with no light and no radiofrequency anywhere in it — the injury itself is the entire stimulus. It is the device behind our microneedling page, where these same ten pairs are published alongside the explanation of what mechanical needling does and where it stops. Two of them the manufacturer files under rosacea and one under keloid scarring; we have kept all ten rather than pick, and said under each what we would and would not use needling for. Dense fine wrinkling across the temple and upper cheek with brown spots through it. In the after photograph the fine lines are shallower and fewer; the brown spots are still present. The skin looks wet or freshly treated in the after frame, and that smooths the appearance of texture on its own.

Horizontal lines across the forehead above the brow. In the after photograph they are considerably fainter and the surface texture looks smoother. The skin is also shinier in the after frame, and a shine flattens the look of lines by itself — some of the difference here is light rather than collagen.

A raised, rope-like scar running down the cheek in front of the ear. In the after photograph the scar sits flatter against the skin and its colour is closer to the surrounding cheek; the scar is still plainly there. We publish this pair because it is part of the set Dermapen supplied, not as an offer. Raised and keloid scarring is a relative contraindication for microneedling in many protocols — needling can prompt more scar tissue in skin that scars this way — and it is not a treatment we offer for keloid or raised scarring. A scar like this needs looking at in person by a clinician who treats them.

Redness across both cheeks with small bumps running through it, and darker marks along the chin and jaw. In the after photograph the redness is paler and the marks are fewer. Dermapen files this pair under rosacea; we route facial redness to IPL and the long-pulsed Nd:YAG rather than to needling, which is what our rosacea page says. The lighting and the angle differ between the two frames.

A pink flush across the cheek with a more defined red patch below the cheekbone. In the after photograph the flush is fainter and the patch is not obvious. This is the manufacturer’s second rosacea pair, and the same point applies: redness is not what we use microneedling for. The hair is pulled back and the light is cooler in the after frame, and both change how redness reads on camera.
