Hands are the odometer of the body. People spend years taking care of their face, and then their hands give the whole thing away — because hands get more sun than almost any other body part (think about where they sit while you drive), and the skin on the back of them is thin, with little padding underneath. Less cushion, more exposure: spots show up earlier and texture goes crepey sooner.
The good news is that the two things that age hands most visibly — sun spots and surface texture — are both treatable, and treating them is quicker and easier than most people expect.
IPL for the spots
Intense pulsed light targets the pigment itself. The light is absorbed preferentially by the brown spots — pigment soaks up the energy the way a dark shirt soaks up sunlight while a white one stays cool — and the surrounding skin is largely left alone. Over the following week the treated spots darken, lift, and flake off like coffee grounds. Most hands want two to three sessions, spaced about a month apart, at $200 per session.
What IPL won’t do: change texture, crepiness, or the prominence of veins and tendons. It’s a pigment tool. If your spots are the complaint, it’s the right tool.
Er:YAG when the texture needs work
When the skin itself has gone thin and crinkly — crepey is really the only word — light resurfacing with the Er:YAG laser does what IPL can’t. Think of restoring a worn tabletop: you’re not painting over the finish, you’re taking the damaged surface layer off so newer, smoother surface can replace it. On hands we keep resurfacing conservative, because hand skin heals more slowly than facial skin and we plan around that, not around wishful thinking. Er:YAG hand resurfacing is $450 per session, typically two to three sessions; forearms are quoted at consultation based on the field we’re treating.
Spots and texture? The combination is common and we sequence it — typically IPL first, resurfacing after — rather than stacking both on the same day.
What we’ll be honest about
If your main concern is prominent veins or a bony look, that’s a volume problem, not a surface problem — and it’s not what IPL or resurfacing fixes. We’ll say so at the consult and point you toward the right kind of provider instead of selling you the wrong treatment. And whatever we treat, new sun exposure regrows spots; sunscreen on the backs of your hands (and reapplied after washing) is what protects the result.

Does it hurt?
Each pulse feels like a small rubber-band snap with warmth. Hands tolerate it well; sessions run about 15–20 minutes with cooling throughout.
What about crepey skin on my hands?
That’s texture, not pigment — IPL won’t touch it. Light Er:YAG resurfacing will, at $450 per session. We often plan IPL for the spots first, then resurfacing for texture, staged so your hands are never out of commission.
How long until my hands look normal after a session?
After IPL: darkened spots and mild redness for roughly five to ten days — makeup isn’t practical on hands, so plan around events. After Er:YAG: pinkness and a healing window we’ll map out for your specific depth of treatment.
Will the spots come back?
The treated spots are gone, but hands keep catching sun, so new ones form over years without protection. Daily SPF on the backs of your hands is the maintenance plan; an occasional touch-up session handles the stragglers.
